Katie & Ben

Katie O’Brien, radio show host of ‘Jared & Katie in the Morning’ on 107.5KZL, and Ben Tesh, regional sales rep for Henry Schein Dental, met one another thanks to Katie’s co-worker, Josie Cothran. Josie attended a charity event in Greensboro and came to work the next morning exclaiming, “Katie, I’ve met your future husband!” But, as luck would have it, Katie was living in Winston-Salem at the time, only commuting to Greensboro for work, and Ben was moving to Asheville for a new work territory.

Eventually, Ben relocated back to Greensboro and Katie, having tired of her 45 minute drive to work, moved to Greensboro as well. One Sunday afternoon, and a new green jacket, was all it took to finally bring Katie and Ben into each other’s lives.

Ben walked up to Katie at The Speakeasy Tavern and said, “I like your green jacket.” Ben later admits he did like the jacket, but was just looking for a reason to speak to her!

That night, Ben contacted Josie and asked if she thought Katie would be interested in getting together. And on January 17th, 2012, the couple had their first date - a wine tasting at 1618 Wine Lounge! Three hours and only a half of a glass of wine later, their journey of falling in love began.

When asked if it was love at first sight, Katie replied, “Yes! Absolutely! Ben and I feel our meeting was one of fate, a plan that God designed!”

In 2014, the couple decided to host their first family Christmas together at their home in Greensboro. The family enjoyed cocktail hour, a lovely dinner and exchanging of gifts by the fireplace.

“After all of the presents were opened, Ben followed me into the kitchen and told me that he had ONE more present for me. After leading me into a quiet room, Ben grabbed a ring box from the closet, dropped to one knee, and told me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. Ben asked me to be his wife!” said Katie.

After a few moments of shock and happy tears, Katie and Ben went into the living room and shared the exciting news with their family! Ben’s father captured those moments on film and the #teshtivities wedding planning soon began.

After growing up in rural Pennsylvania and then attending Appalachian State University, Katie knew that an open air, farm-feel felt natural for their wedding style. Her love of all things outdoors, wide-open fields and crisp, fall weather led to her plan of a Southern rustic celebration at The Barn at Summerfield Farms.

With the help of their event designer, Melissa Lewkowicz, owner of Relish Design Company, the couple selected some of their favorite colors, including dark purples, deep greens and ivory (with touches of fall colors), along with burlap accents, for their flowers and décor.

Married under the “Little Tree” at Summerfield Farms, their wedding party consisted of Katie’s sisters, Colleen & Molly, as her matrons of honor and 11 honorary bridesmaids who all wore purple dresses they selected themselves.

“These ladies have been by my side for a very long time and mean the world to me! I couldn’t imagine our big day without them playing a special part,” said Katie.

Ben’s best friends, Joey and Jeff, stood beside him as “Best Men”.

After the heart-felt ceremony performed by Reverend Gerald Donnelly (also known as “Rev G”), and many more happy tears, Katie and Ben’s guests enjoyed a hay ride around the scenic Summerfield Farms. They were then treated to cocktail hour with passed hors d’oeuvres, followed by a family-style reception dinner, catered by Fresh.Local.Good food group. The menu included table-passed platters of some of the couple’s favorites like bacon wrapped, tomato-glazed meatloaf, Gouda Mac ‘n Cheese, roasted root vegetables and herb-rubbed citrus chicken.

When asked about some of her favorite memories from their wedding celebrations, Katie replied, “Ben and I weren’t the only ones who did a ‘first look’. Our groomsmen did one too…all captured on camera by Ross Photography! Priceless!

“And, at our rehearsal dinner, my honorary bridesmaids put on a performance of a lifetime - including a choreographed dance to a montage of parody songs they wrote that Jared [Katie’s co-host on 107.5KZL] helped them create, and kept a secret the whole time!

“Our entire vendor team was incredible. Is there a word for ‘the best, most special, goes above and beyond, makers of every single dream and wish come true’? If so, that’s the word I’d use.

“I wouldn’t have done a single thing differently. It’s so crazy to see pictures now of all the happenings before walking down the aisle. I almost forgot about some of the details we worked so hard on. I felt excitement all over again when recognizing certain things while walking with my Dad....the shepherd’s hooks, the gorgeous arbor, the beautiful flowers.....everything exceeded our wildest dreams! We are so overwhelmed and emotional about how wonderful our day was and about how special we feel!” Katie concluded.
